Morning Dove Hunting Opposed

2002-03 Michigan Audubon Society Resolution

BACKGROUND
The pro-dove hunting forces have tried for many years to obtain a mourning dove hunting season in Michigan, without succeeding. In 2001 a bill was introduced in the state House of Representatives, HB 5478, that would transfer from the legislature to the Natural Resource Commission the power to list and de-list game species. The Michigan Audubon Society feels that this is just a back-door maneuver to enable them to list the mourning dove as a game species and, subsequently, establish a hunting season for the doves. The Michigan Audubon Society has been strongly opposed to dove hunting from our beginnings in 1904. The mourning dove has not been listed as a game species since 1905 in the State of Michigan.

BE IT RESOLVED that the Michigan Audubon Society is completely opposed to HB 5478. We feel that taking the responsibility from the legislature, which is answerable to the voters of this state, and handing it over to the Natural Resources Commission, which is a body of un-elected officials, would be totally unacceptable.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Michigan Audubon Society would like for the Michigan legislative body to accept the responsibility given them to list and de-list game species and not pass it on to an un-elected body which is not answerable to the voters of this state. This move would be in direct opposition to the trust that has been placed in our elected representatives.
