Action Alert Update

UPDATE TO ACTION ALERT UPDATE December 31, 2002

It's an understatement, reported Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press, "any notion that mischief and unpredictability weren't on the agenda for the start of December's lame-duck session was dispelled...'Anything and everything can happen,' read the agenda for the Legislature's first day back after Thanksgiving."

While HB 5478 was postured to move during the last days of the lame-duck, dove shooting proponents were unable to bring this deceptive bill to the floor for vote because concerned citizens all over the state made their voice heard loud and clear once again - NO to shooting doves and NO to sneaky backdoor politics!

YOUR voice and participation has continued the protection of this songbird!

UPDATE TO ACTION ALERT December 6, 2002:

On December 3rd several citizens went to Lansing to meet with their Legislators and talk about continuing Michigan's long heritage and tradition of mourning dove protection. Legislators have received considerable constituent contact, THOUSANDS are in opposition to dove hunting in Michigan. The pro-active (vs re-active) approach concerned citizens have taken has caused dove shooting proponents to scramble - on December 4th Rep Tabor attempted to hold a "rally" at the Capitol to try to offset the "damage" (lost votes) constituents are causing.

Apparently, Tabor's dove shooting group has doubled since October 2001 - around fifty people showed up. Tabor herself counseled activists to arrive in camo or blaze orange and "charge" into Legislators offices as a "force"...an overbearing approach that was not well received. Ironically most were said to be bear hunters or gun rights activists, not dove hunters. While Tabor has tried to play upon unfounded fears and misrepresentations, mainstream traditional hunters aren't buying into the fringe element rhetoric.

Our collective voice is making a real difference, it's not too late for your voice to count. This legislation could still move VERY quickly as all of the "rules" have been "conveniently" suspended for the lameduck session. The House and Senate should recess on or around December 13th. Until then, the mourning dove and our legislative authority is still at risk. Proponents are hoping to slip this through before Granholm takes office.

THANK YOU for all of your hard work on this issue! YOU are making the difference!
